Second Victim Syndrome

This is an evidence-based approach to train physicians to overcome the negative emotional consequences associated with medical error. We developed a narrative guide (based off literature review, constructivist theory, Gibbs reflective cycle) to support progressive cycles of reflection. A near-peer presenter uses this guide to develop their narrative about emotional burden after a medical error. They share their story interspersed with group breakout sessions to allow the audience to share their personal experiences

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  1. Empathically listen to a narrative of personal involvement in medical error and its emotional toll

  2. Define second victim syndrome

  3. Recognize symptoms of second victim syndrome in yourself and others

  4. Understand how to support yourself and others to overcome second victim syndrome
